- <p> For years Japan has responded to questions about wartime
- prostitution with icy indifference. Officials denied government
- involvement in what historical records clearly show -- that the
- Japanese military forced tens of thousands of Asian women into
- a vast network of government-run brothels during World War II.
- But in a move that reflects the country's determination to
- upgrade its international image, Japan finally acknowledged
- government complicity and hinted it would consider extending
- financial assistance to the surviving victims.
